According to the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) 2050 scenario, 94% of global hydrogen production will be supplied by renewable energy sources.
According to information compiled by an Anadolu Agency correspondent from IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023 report, policy support for the development of hydrogen applications across various sectors has accelerated since October 2022.
Electrification and energy efficiency play an important role in the transportation, energy, and manufacturing sectors. In this context, activities involving renewable energy, clean hydrogen, and sustainable biomass are increasing.
Global investment in infrastructure for clean hydrogen production and related technologies more than tripled last year compared with the previous year. While investments reached USD 1.1 billion last year, total annual investment in this field is expected to reach approximately USD 170 billion by 2050.
Hydrogen Will Play a “Key Role” in Carbon-Intensive Sectors
According to IRENA’s 2050 scenario, the share of renewable energy in the global energy supply is expected to increase from 16% in 2020 to 77% by 2050.
Electrolyser manufacturing capacity, which is crucial for clean hydrogen production, reached 0.5 gigawatts last year and is projected to increase to a total of 5,722 gigawatts by 2050.
The use of hydrogen is particularly encouraged in carbon-intensive industrial sectors, including the production and processing of materials such as iron and steel.
By providing grid flexibility through its energy-storage capabilities, hydrogen also plays a key role in helping end users achieve their decarbonisation targets.
Under the European Union’s REPowerEU Plan, published in May last year, the EU aims to replace its dependence on Russian fossil fuels with domestic resources by 2030.
Within this framework, the EU plans to accelerate renewable energy investments, increase its annual green hydrogen production to 10 million tonnes, and import an additional 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen.
According to the report, international investment in hydrogen production and transportation is expected to accelerate. Declining renewable energy investment costs and advances in electrolyser capacity are expected to enable green hydrogen production to reach competitive price levels.
As HOWTEK, in response to the continuously growing demand for hydrogen, we will begin supplying hydrogen to the international market in 2025 in three forms: compressed low-pressure gas at 12 bar, hydrogen in cylinders, and liquefied hydrogen stored in cryogenic tanks.
